Magnetic Separation Pulleys for the Recycling Industry

Bunting® Magnetics Co. offers an extensive line of Magnetic Separation Head Pulleys for conveyors in the Recycling Industry. Bunting® Magnetics Co. Magnetic Separation Pulleys are becoming known as the “Magnetic Pulleys of Choice” for the Recycling Industry. These pulleys offer superior removal of ferrous contamination like nails, spikes, nuts, bolts, cans, and wire for conveyors in the paper, wood, plastic, steel and municipal recycling industries with maintenance free operation. Magnetic Separation Head Pulleys are a way of continuously removing and discharging tramp metal from the product flow for both product purification and materials separation. They can also be used for continual separation of ferrous from non-ferrous steels in scrap metal recovery separation for metal stamping facilities.

Bunting® Magnetics Co. Magnetic Separation Pulleys are designed and manufactured for maximum reachout, holding force and separation effectiveness. Whether you are pulling nails and staples out of a carpet or pallet recycling facility or cans and steel scrap at a municipal solid waste recovery facility, these Magnetic Pulleys are ready to clean your product, separate materials and make you money.

OEM Separation Pulleys –

Magnetic Separation Pulley.jpg If you are designing and building your own conveyors, Bunting® Magnetics Co. offers economical OEM Magnetic Ceramic Separation Pulleys or the optional high intensity Neo Rare Earth pulleys for those critical separation jobs. These economical Magnetic Separation Pulleys can be used to replace your existing head pulleys to turn your material handling conveyor into a material separation conveyor. These pulleys can be provided with the same shaft as your existing conveyor has. But remember that stainless steel shafts are recommended on pulleys under 15” in diameter because magnetism can be transmitted to the shaft magnetizing the shaft and it also makes it more difficult to install a mild steel shaft on the smaller sizes.

We offer the pulleys in an economical stepped crowned face, machine crowned face, flat faced and an assortment of rubber vulcanized crowned covers. To match up to your conveyor, Bunting® Magnetics Co. offers an assortment of Taper Lock or QD hubs for any shaft diameter you need or welded in shafts to slip into the end of your conveyor.

Installation Options –

Bunting® Magnetic Separation Pulleys can be installed in the two basic configurations as seen below. The first is using the Magnetic Pulley alone which works fine in most installations. The second is used in conjunction with a Magnetic Take-off Rail which helps convey the ferrous tramp back from the end of the conveyor and farther away from the clean product stream. This works especially well on the smaller pulley diameters but is very effective on all sizes.

IMG_0196 cropped.jpg Bunting® Magnetics Co. Magnetic Separation Pulleys are even more effective when used in combination with overhead Magnetic Cross-Belt Conveyors on thicker burdens or more dense conveyed materials. This is usually done when the burden depths are high or when maximum separation is needed. This is because an overhead Magnetic Cross-Belt may not get some nails or small steel plates lying directly on the belt surface under a heavier burden like construction waste or in mining applications. But when they 100_5607-revised.jpg get to the end of the conveyor – the bottom tramp metal is easily separated out with the magnetic separation head pulley. A popular combination for maximum separation is a Ceramic Cross-Belt used in conjunction with and up stream from a Neo Rare Earth Magnetic Separation Pulley as seen here.

Magnetic Take-off Rails

take off rails.jpg Bunting® Magnetic Take-off Rails are an effective means as described in the above diagram to move the collected tramp steel back away from the clean material stream. The Magnet Rails in effect continue the magnetic field of the Magnetic Separation magnetic takeoff rail2.jpg Pulley to hold the captured metal and release it farther down stream. The Magnetic Take-off Rails are designed and built to the same width as your Magnetic Separation Pulley and can be from 12” to 36” in length. They are designed with cross channels for our Customers to mount to their conveyor frames directly behind the Magnetic Separation Pulley.

Pulley Capacities and Weights

The following table gives estimated capacities of some common Magnetic pulleys sizes in cubic feet per hour. The table also has recommended minimum shaft sizes for the pulleys as a design aid. The diagram shows the dimensions that will be needed to quote and build a Magnetic Separation Pulley for your application. Remember that usually the larger the pulley diameter – the more effective it is for magnetic separation!
