Crossbelt Separators
Magnetic Cross-Belt Conveyors
for the Recycling Industry
Bunting® Magnetic Co. Magnetic Cross-Belt Conveyors are the “Conveyor of Choice” for continuous over-conveyor separation for the Recycling Industry to magnetically separate out ferrous materials from non-ferrous materials and protect Shredder and Grinder Equipment. Whether you are in the Plastic, Tire, Paper, Wood or E-Scrap Recycling business, Bunting® Magnetic Cross-Belts will do a great job of removing tramp metal to clean your product and to protect your Shredder and Grinder Equipment from costly knife damage. Or if you are in the mining industry, Bunting® Magnetic Cross-Belts do a great job removing teeth or scrap steel before damage to Crushers can occur. Bunting® Magnetic Co. offers three lines of Magnetic Cross-Belt Conveyors shown here.

Permanent Magnetic Cross-Belts are a very economical choice and have many advantages over electro cross-belt, thanks to lower initial cost, lower maintenance costs, and longer-term durability and reliability. They don’t leak or need an extra expensive power supply. Nor do they have coils that short out and need costly repairs or be rewound.
Permanent Magnetic Cross-Belt Conveyors provide continuous removal of ferrous contaminants from the material conveyed on the belt below. Tramp metal is snapped up out of the lower product stream by the strong deep reach overhead magnetic conveyor – captured on the cleated overhead belt – and kicked off the end of the overhead magnetic conveyor into a scrap dumpster.
Bunting® Cross-Belt Conveyors have distinct design advantages. The biggest advantage is our UHMW wings on our side extension on either side of the suspended magnets. These UHMW wings extend over the edge of the belt to protect the edge of the belt from tramp metal tears and help restrict tramp metal from getting under the belt on the surface of the magnet which can build up and tear up belts on competitive units.
Bunting® Magnetics Co. also provides the option on our 650 and 450 Series Magnetic Cross-Belt Conveyors to use Neo high intensity Rare Earth Magnets for maximum separation effectiveness.
The two sketches below show the two most common installations of Magnetic Crossbelt Conveyors. The most common installation is perpendicular to the lower belted conveyor at a convenient location and mounted as low as possible to maximize the magnetic intensity and to maximize the separation effectiveness. The other installation is at the end of the conveyor where the material is fluidized as it flows off the end of the conveyor which is common for more dense materials.

Bunting® 950 Series Magnetic Cross-Belt Conveyors
These units are are designed and manufactured for the heavier duty recycling and mining applications. These include municipal trash, construction debris, tires, heavy plastics or mining applications. These units provide from 10” to 16” of reachout depending on using a 24” or 36” wide belted Cross-Belt. These units will magnetically remove ferrous material from burden depths of 4” to 8” at speeds up to 300 fpm on flat or troughed belts depending on the product density.
Bunting® 650 Series Magnetic Cross-Belt Conveyors
These units are designed and manufactured for the medium duty recycling applications with lower burden depths, slower running lower belts and lighter separation requirements. They are usually used in those applications where the product has been initially shredded. These units are more economical than the 950 Series and are typically used over a Shredder discharge conveyor over material that has been shredded and we are looking to remove smaller ferrous metal from lighter fluffier product. These units have a 6 ½” effective reachout and are designed for burdens depths of 2” to 4” on a flat or slightly troughed belts. These Magnetic Cross-Belts can be either Ceramic or high intensity Rare Earth magnetic material for maximum separation.
Bunting® 450 Series Magnetic Cross-Belt Conveyors
These units are designed and manufactured for the lighter duty recycling applications with lower burden depths, slower running lower belts and lighter separation requirements. These are usually thinner layers of material whether it is parts separation for quality control or light volume ground material for product purification. These are the most economical Cross-Belt Conveyors which typically have a 4 ½” designed effective reachout over flat belt with 1” to 2” of burden depth. These Magnetic Cross-Belts can be either Ceramic or high intensity Rare Earth magnetic material for maximum separation.
Optional Equipment
Include the support structure to suspend these conveyors over your lower belted conveyor as seen here. These can range from the heavy-duty tubular or channel steel adjustable supports with turnbuckles or heavy threaded rods suspensions to lighter formed steel support structures that mount onto the lower conveyor for the small Magnetic Cross-Belt Conveyors. All are designed to adjust the magnetic field as low to maximize separation but clear the thickest burden depth. Other options include expanded metal shields and guarding on the ends of the conveyor along with custom fabricated tramp iron chutes and electrical controls.
